History
How the Trust came about
- Background
- The Medical Society Insurance Trust was established in Marion County nearly 40 years ago.
- Purpose
- Created by physician employers in the private practice of medicine as a way to provide comprehensive medical coverage to their employees and families.
- Growth
- The program has expanded to 12 counties state-wide and continues to offer affordable insurance solutions to independent physician practices.
- Sustainability
- Governed by a Board of Trustees made up of local leadership and decision makers, to manage risk and ensure long-term success.
Advantages
What the Trust gives a practice
- Plan variety
- Groups can offer up to 11 different health plans through Florida Blue.
- Rate stability
- A funding strategy called Minimum Premium lets the Trust operate as one state-wide program, to further stabilize healthcare costs for the practice and its employees.
- Large-group benefits
- Joining the Trust gives small groups access to large-group benefits and rates.
- State-wide reserves
- The Minimum Premium structure protects the reserve balance. As state-wide plan performance improves, premium holidays provide additional rate relief.
